Fun Friday Fact! Almonds and Art

In addition to truly scrumptious recipes by Lynda Baslev, our newest book: Almonds: Recipes, History and Culture is filled to the brim with beautiful almond-inspired artwork from around the world.

As the lovely introduction in the book details, artists have been inspired by the poetic beauty of the almond nut – and the rose tree that bears it – for centuries. In the realm of religious art, the almond would play a particularly indelible role. Ancient Egyptians found the almond alluring enough to inscribe on the walls of their tombs while Christian art – from the Byzantine period and beyond – saved the graceful curve of the almond nut shape for only the most sacrosanct of imagery.

If you’ve seen any medieval art, you’re no doubt familiar with the “mandorla” – the luminous cloud that surrounds sacred personages. Medieval artists used the almond shape to signify the divine nature of the subject it enclosed.  But what does “mandorla” actually mean? Why, it’s the Italian word for “almond”!  (Proof that the almond’s appeal is truly out of this world).

Murray Rose’s Malabar Magic Ocean Swim 2014

Are you in Sydney? Do you love to swim? Want to help out an amazing charity?

Why not battle the surf with more than a thousand Sydney swimmers in Murray Rose’s Malabar Magic Ocean Swim to be held this Sunday, 16th February 2014!

Founded in 2008, the Malabar Magic Ocean Swim raises money for Rainbow Club Australia, a charity that supports swimming programs for children with disabilities.

Murray Rose, author of our new book Life is Worth Swimming, was a treasured patron of Rainbow Club Australia. Following his death in early 2012, the Board of Rainbow Club Australia decided to honour Murray’s work with the charity by renaming the ocean swim after him.

When:  Sunday, 16th February 2014. On-the-day registration closes 8:30am

Life is Worth Swimming Book Launch

On the 19th of November 2013, Life is Worth Swimming, the eagerly awaited memoir by the late Australian swimming icon Murray Rose, was officially launched at the North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club by Australian Olympians Grant Hackett and Shane Gould

Reminiscing about Rose’s great achievements and influence on the history of international competitive swimming, Shane Gould described Murray Rose as a man “attuned to the water” and said that watching him swim was a “spiritual moment”. Grant Hackett cited Murray Rose as a “great inspiration” and said that “the dialogue (of Australian swimming) started with Murray…he was a master of the sport”.

Notable Australian sports commentator and comedian Greig Pickhaver (AKA H.G. Nelson), who acted as Master of Ceremonies at the launch, said of Rose, “Murray felt something for the water and discovered the purpose of life by moving through it”.

Launchers Shane Gould, Grant Hackett and Grieg Pickhaver were joined by Rose’s widow, Jodi, and fellow Olympians and friends, including John and Wendy Devitt and long-distance swimmer Susie Maroney.

Veganissimo! Beautiful Vegan Food Book Launch

On a balmy Tuesday evening in November, we launched our newest cookbook – Veganissimo! Beautiful Vegan Food, by Leigh Drew – to great acclaim at The Cruelty Free Shop, Glebe.

The book was officially launched by Lynda Stoner (CEO of Animal Liberation) and Master of Ceremonies Jess Bailey (Owner of The Cruelty Free Shop). During the launch Lynda Stoner emphasised the importance of providing a voice to those who are voiceless (animals) and highlighted the significance of Veganissimo! as a fun, accessible cookbook for both vegans and anyone interested in vegan cuisine.

Guests were offered a splendid vegan spread including different types of vegan bacon, vegan cheese, a range of dips and pikelets – all prepared especially for the event by Veganissimo!’s Sydney-based author, Leigh Drew, from recipes in the book.
